Pokemon Birthday

For my son's birthday this year he choose a Pokémon theme. The cake and cupcakes turned out so cute I just had to share.

The character is Pikachu, some kind of character from the Pokemon cartoon series.

I got inspiration for the cake from Pinterest.

I used graham crackers for the ears. I "sawed" them into the point with a knife very slowly (they will break easily if you don't saw back and forth slowly). Then covered them in icing for the correct coloring.

For the cupcakes I used candy corn for the ears (covered them with icing to make them the correct color) and chocolate chips for the eyes.

I think they turned out cute and his class knew what they were instantly, so at least they were recognizable!

A Monster of a Birthday Party

 

My adorable daughter turned 6 right before Halloween. We decided to have a monster party this year...

 

 

With a monster cake...

 

I used marshmallows for the eyes and pre-colored teal frosting so the cake came together quickly.

 

 

I made the girls each a monster bean bag (well they are filled with rice and not beans) I made them just with scraps of felt.

 



 

I also made each girl a monster shirt to match their monster bean bag. I got the shirts from the 99cent store and then using my Cricut and freezer paper I painted a monster onto each.

 

 

I sent the girls on a "Monster Hunt" (scavenger hunt where one clue leads to a monster and the next clue) until all the girls had matching monsters. Then they lined up for a bean bag toss...

 

 

I just made the bean bag toss target out of a cardboard box. I used acrylic paint for the body and white & black construction paper for the teeth and eyes.

 





 

 Also for the birthday girl I made a Bubble Ruffle Tutu Skirt using this tutorial from the Creative Vault.

 

The girls had a great time and were all pleased to be leaving with a monster shirt like the birthday girl and a little baby monster to play with.

Milk & Cookie Birthday Party

My adorable little nephew just turned 1! I can't believe it has been a year already since I made these shirts for my family to meet him in the hospital.

He had a milk and cookie themed party. And I designed the invitations. I used Adobe Illustrator to draw out the design.

 I also helped my sister out while she made dozens and dozens of cookies by making the cookie cake.

I used 3 chocolate circular cakes with a thin layer of icing in between for the base. And for the cookies on the top I carved the cookie shape out of 2 white circular cakes. Since the shaping left all the edges crumbly I had to do 2 layers of icing to cover the cake crumbs that mixed into the icing.

I then stuck real chocolate chips into the cookie on the top. I used larger bakers chocolate chips for decoration around the bottom and top of the base cake.

I think Liam thought my cake was awesome!

I also made a chalkboard poster for a photo prop with all of Liam's first year information. There are a lot of them on Etsy right now that are hand painted with pen markers but I am a little more indecisive, I like to place something try it out, move it around, change the font, see where it looks best.... so I did my poster on the computer.

 I used Adobe Illustrator but you could use any vector based design program. I downloaded my favorite chalk board fonts from www.dafont.com or you could use the links from this site: http://www.lilblueboo.com/2013/01/favorite-free-chalkboard-fonts.html

I took the file to staples and printed a engineer print, only cost $3.46. Then I used spray adhesive to attach the paper to a black foam board then cut off the white border and voila! Done.

My sister had tons of unique, special touches to make this party awesome, these were just my contributions.

Owl Cake for a Babyshower

Here is the owl cake that I made for my sister's baby shower. I love the way it turned out and it was really easy to do. Here's how I did it:

I used 2 boxes of cake mix, I used spice cake, I thought it would be a nice change from the normal white or chocolate. Bake the mix in two- 13" round pans and two- 9" round pans.

The two 9" round cakes are the eyes and one of the 13" round cakes are the body. The other 13" round cake you cut into your wings, feet, and top of head. Here is what it looks like before iced.

Next, decorate! I used 2 jugs of icing, making these shades of brown and a little yellow for the beak and feet.

I think this would be cute for any party! Hope you all had a good weekend.

What Time Is It? Birthday Time!

As I have mentioned before on this blog my son is a huge fan of Adventure Time, a cartoon on Cartoon Network. So it was an easy decision to choose the theme for his birthday party this year.

Here is the cool card my mom made.

Here is the cake, I meant to have Finn front and center but after I finished Jake I wrote Happy Birthday and forgot to turn the cake back around so Jake ended up in the front.

 

I also made some Finn cupcakes for his classmates.



I just used mini marshmallows for the hat ears and chocolate chips for the eyes, this made the 24 cupcakes really easy and fast to decorate.

I also made some cute little clay figures from sculpty clay. They were really easy to do.

Just sculpt the figures out of clay, bake and paint. Ialso clear spray painted them so they are a little more durable and chip proof.
