So this is my first entry into the Project Run & Play, I wasn't chosen to participate in the contest but I am going to play along and enter into the Sew Along Contest on Flickr. The theme this week is to remix Dana from Made's Circle Skirt.
Here is what I came up with...
I started off with the circle skirt, I followed the tutorial exactly and made the skirt from a thick piece of gray jersey knit material.
Instead of attaching the top of the skirt to the elastic I decided to "remix" the pattern into a dress. Since the material is t-shirt material I thought a nice t-shirt dress would be cute. I used one of my daughter's shirts as a pattern.
On the skirt I wanted to do something bold and unique so I thought I would make some sort of comic strip of superheroes appliqued onto it. First I drew them all out...
And then went through the pain staking process of tracing on to interfacing, ironing it on to knit colored fabric, cutting out every piece and ironing that into place onto the skirt. If you want to see an example of this process I did it on the Adventure Time Shirt and the Valentine Shirt for a Boy.
Here is what you are left with...
Next I did the other 3 panels the same way, choosing to do some cartoon words.
After all the pieces are ironed down I zig-zag stitched around every piece.
After the skirt was finished I attached the shirt. I just sewed the two pieces together, then using a piece of red fabric I made a casing to pull my elastic through.
The simpleness of the t-shirt style top and the jersey knit fabric makes this dress really comfortable and easy to play in.
And the circle skirt bottom makes the skirt really fun to spin in!
The dress kind of took on a life of its own, when I started with this idea in my head it didn't seem like I would be this long of a process but I love how it turned out and I plan on having her wear it a lot to make the effort worth it!
